NEW PACKAGING!! LEGO Baseplates Going Eco-Friendly in 2022

Hey guys! Remember back when we just started to see a little bit of green outside and Spring was in the air? It was then, on April 13, 2021 we posted about the possible EOL for the LEGO baseplates. Go back and check that post out HERE. Well turns out, the baseplates live on! LEGO announced that the baseplates will be headed for a more eco-friendly route moving forward in 2022, switching from plastic packaging to paper! In my opinion, this was way overdue, but happy to see the changes in place. And with this, comes new product numbers. Hence the reason why people thought they were EOL since they were all marked for retirement by the end of February 2022. The new paper packaged baseplates will release March 2022. Ah makes sense now!

Over the next few months you will likely see some products with “retiring soon” branding or perhaps a local retailer reporting that they are no longer able to order certain products. We want to share ahead of time that there is no need to be alarmed about baseplates.

In 2022, baseplates will be changing from their current plastic packaging to more sustainable paper packaging. Besides packaging, there are no additional changes with the LEGO baseplates and you will still be able to get the same colors and sizes in 2022 that you can purchase today. You can expect to see the new packaging around March 1, 2022.

White1101011026 “In fact, the EOL date is correct for the old baseplates in February 2022, but the plates simply come back under a new number and in new packaging, namely from March 2022 . While the old LEGO base plates were still wrapped in plastic, the new ones are probably wrapped in paper. This makes the new baseplates the (so far) first product in which LEGO keeps its promise to use paper instead of plastic for packaging in the future .” “According to a sustainability roundtable that I attended previously, this initiative will eventually encompass polybags and most probably the individual minifigure packaging as well.

I’m all for swapping out plastic to a more sustainable alternative but LEGO has to make sure that there isn’t an increase in their carbon footprint to produce these paper packaging as well as the increased weight in shipping them.” “This also bodes well for LEGO’s commitment to transition towards 100% sustainable packaging by 2025, and I would very much like to see LEGO’s inner plastic polybags go next.”
